The viaduct where the steam train runs
We walked the valley floor and waited for the whistle.
Every summer an old steam train runs over the stone viaduct in the valley. We parked by the river and walked along the path under the arches.
At half past ten we heard it. A whistle, then smoke above the trees, then the train itself, small and black against the stone. The smoke hung in the air for a minute after it was gone.
The walk back
Six kilometres, the smell of coal smoke still in my jacket. My partner said it was a long way to go for one minute. Then he asked when it runs next year.
