Kitchen
An empty restaurant at four
Too late for lunch, too early for dinner. The best table is always free.
Freja Ås
I like restaurants in the dead hours. The chairs are still pushed in. Someone is folding napkins at the back. The chef comes out to smoke and nods at you.
I ordered soup and a glass of water and sat for an hour with a book. Nobody hurried me. The room filled slowly from six and I left as the noise came in.
The cost
One soup. It was the cheapest afternoon of the trip and the one I remember best.
