Planing a board flat
You think you are making it smooth. Really you are learning which way the grain runs.
Tove Hallberg
A plane is the simplest tool in the shed and it took me a month to use it properly. Go against the grain and the wood tears. Go with it and you get long curls that smell like a forest.
I practised on a pine board for a cutting board. By the end it was thinner than I planned and perfectly flat.
The curls
I keep a jar of them on the windowsill. My daughter thinks they are decorations. I suppose they are.
