Underlining in pencil
I write in my books. Lightly, so the next reader can pretend I didn't.

I was raised to keep books clean. Then I found my grandfather's copy of a poetry collection with his notes in the margins, and it was the best thing in the house.
So now I underline. In pencil, lightly. A line I want to find again. A question mark where I disagree.
The journal
The best lines I copy into a notebook by hand. Writing them out slowly is a second reading. Some sentences only make sense the second time.
