The old town on a weekday

Half-timbered houses, a clock tower, and nobody selling souvenirs yet.

Ingrid Lund

We stayed in a small German town in April before the season started. The streets were cobbles and flowers, the houses leaned towards each other, and most shops were still closed.

In the morning we had it to ourselves. A woman watering window boxes. A baker with flour on his sleeves. Pigeons on the tower.

A friend went in summer and said you could not move for tour groups. I am glad we were early. Some places need to be seen while they are still yawning.
