Waiting for real dark
In June it never comes. In August it finally does, and I go up the mountain.
Summer in the north is too bright for stars. I wait until late August, when the nights start to go properly black, and drive up to the ski slope above town.
I set up the camera on the tripod and wait for my eyes to adjust. Twenty minutes in, the Milky Way comes out like someone dimmed the room.
The picture
Thirty seconds of exposure, a mountain edge, a sky full of dust. My hands shook from cold, not excitement. Mostly.
