Weeding after rain
Dry ground snaps the root. Wet ground lets you have the whole thing, which is the only victory on offer.
I used to weed when it suited me, which meant when the sun was out and I wanted to feel useful. The bindweed laughed. After rain the soil lets go. You pull and the white cord comes up in a length that feels like cheating.
The path between the beds is still mud. My knees are wet. This is the job. I don't put on the radio. The worms are loud enough if you pay attention, which I usually don't until I almost cut one.
The pile
I leave the weeds on the gravel to dry. They look defeated. Tomorrow they will try to root again if I forget to move them. I forget often.
