The footbridge in the forest
Someone built a proper bridge over a stream you could jump. I am grateful every time.
The trail north of the reservoir crosses a stream about a metre wide. You could step over it in summer. Someone built a steel footbridge anyway, with railings and a slight arch, as if a river might arrive one day.
In March the stream is not a metre wide. It is loud and brown and full of last year's leaves. The bridge stops looking silly.
Standing on it
I stop in the middle every time. Not for the view. For the sound of water underneath and the feeling that someone planned for a worse day than this one.
