Trees that got there first
The avenue was planned around the buildings. The trees ignored the plan.
On the street behind the bank the trees are older than half the facades. You can tell because the pavement bends around them and the newer buildings have notches in their canopies where someone gave up and let the branches be.
In summer the street is green from one end to the other. You walk in shade past glass and stone and the city feels like it rented the space.
The roots
They lift the paving every few years. The council relays it. The roots lift it again. I hope nobody ever wins.
