The flower stall by the bakery
I go for bread and leave with tulips. The baker knows and has stopped laughing.
In spring the woman next to the bakery puts buckets of flowers on the pavement. Tulips, then peonies, then whatever the season allows. Everything is wrapped in brown paper with a bit of string.
I never plan to buy any. Then I see a colour I want on the table and I am carrying bread in one arm and a bunch in the other.
How long they last
Tulips a week. Peonies four days if I am lucky. I have stopped counting it as a waste. It is the cheapest way I know to make a Thursday feel like a weekend.
