Orange against a blue sky
California poppies on a Swedish balcony. They didn't seem to mind the move.
A friend sent me seeds in an envelope with a postcard. I sowed them in a long box on the balcony rail and forgot about them.
They came up thin and grey-green and then opened all at once on a hot day in June. The orange is almost rude. Against the sky it looks like someone turned up the colour on the world.
At night
They close when the sun goes. Every evening the balcony goes quiet and every morning it shouts again. I check them before coffee.
