Calm sea at six
Some mornings the Baltic looks like a sheet of glass. You notice because it is rare.
Most days the sea outside the harbour has an opinion. Waves, chop, wind from somewhere. Then one morning in August it was flat. Not still. Flat. Like someone had ironed it.
I rowed out a hundred metres and stopped. The oars dripped. Somewhere a ferry made a long low sound.
Back on land
By eight the wind came and the glass was gone. I told my wife about it at breakfast. She said I looked like I had been to church.
