Water

The rocks at dusk

Granite stays warm after sunset. People stay too.

Erik Strand

The cliffs at the end of the island are smooth and pink and hold the day's heat long into the evening. In July half the village goes there after dinner.

Nobody organises it. You bring a blanket, a thermos, maybe a bottle. You sit on the warm rock and watch the sky go purple over the water.

The swim

Someone always goes in. Someone always says it is warm. It is never warm. I go in anyway, because the rock is waiting to dry me off.
