Walking
Following the river up
Start at the bridge and walk against the water until lunch.
Erik Strand
My rule for a walk in new country is simple. Find a river. Walk upstream. Turn back when hungry.
In the mountains last summer that meant four hours along cold turquoise water, past rapids and pools and a place where the river split around an island of stones.
Lunch
Crispbread, cheese, an apple. I ate it with my feet in the river. Three minutes was all I could stand. The water had been snow a week before.
