Hills in layers
From the top you can count the ridges. Each one is a shade paler.
Erik Strand
On a hazy day the hills go back in layers like paper cut-outs. Dark green, lighter green, grey, then something that might be hills or might be sky.
I climbed the lookout tower at the nature reserve to see it. Seventy-two steps. A sign said the view reached forty kilometres. I believe it.
Coming down
Seventy-two steps again, and my knees told me about every one. The view was still there in my head on the drive home. It lasted longer than the knee.
